Living in San Antonio, Texas offers us many opportunities to use the Spanish language. I have tried to incorporate learning Spanish many times into our school but have been unsuccessful. We have used a couple of different programs and they all end up tossed out for various reasons. It's too hard, or it's too boring, or it doesn't make sense. I knew as soon as I saw the Starter Set 1 from Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids, that I had to give it a shot.
What is Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids?
Kit Straus founded Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids when she couldn't find adequate learning materials to help teach her 3 sons a foreign language. She realized that not only do kids like watching other kids, but that they can actually learn from each other. She was also aware of the fact that kids who were allowed to learn a foreign language early on had an easier time learning it. She has put together a wonderful curriculum that focuses on humor and uses the immersion method of learning. The kids will jump right in using phrases and vocabulary after watching the very interesting and fun video that is part of the program.
What did we receive?
We received the Starter Set 1 for beginners. It includes:
- A complete 20 week curriculum guide - This is basically your teacher's manual that walks you through the program and gives you a day to day plan.
- DVD with the first 3 levels of videos
- 3 workbooks - Each workbook goes along with the level and video that your child is working on
- Sticker Set - These stickers are wonderful for labeling things around the house so that your child can continue to learn throughout the day.
- Flashcard Set - There are flashcards with graphics and vocabulary for all 3 levels.
- BONUS: For a limited time only, they are offering their fun card game extension, Go Squish!
How did we use the program?
We definitely used this everyday, and we are still continuing to use it. The first day we used it, we were only supposed to watch the first 5 minutes of the first video, but my kids were so interested, that we ended up watching the entire thing. Of course, they are a bit older, but even Edyn who is 14 enjoyed it. By the end of that video that had already picked up several vocabulary words and phrases!
At the beginning of each teacher's manual, there is a list of the vocabulary that you will be working on for that level. This is nice to be able to refer back to it while helping the kids learn.
Each day you are given a lesson to do. A lot of times we would start off by watching the video, and then proceed on to whatever lesson coincided with it in the workbook. You will watch the video many times, but this is all part of the process. The video is really entertaining and engaging. It gives them a visual to put the words or phrases with. After watching the video, one day they might play a game using their vocabulary words, and another day that might be working with the flashcards. There were days that my kids were not wanting to watch the video, and just move on to the lessons. I didn't think this was a good idea because it's not how the program is supposed to work. Your children will watch that video over and over and remember the words and phrases...and it works!!
One of the things my kids really enjoyed was going around the house and labeling different things with their stickers.
Not only are they learning the language, but there are also some great geography lessons to go with it, My kids have enjoyed this side of things too!
What did we think?
We love it! The video is great, and I am super impressed that my kids had already learned quite a bit after the very first day! The layout of the teacher's manual makes teaching this every day extremely easy. Each lesson is fun and engaging for the kids. The workbook is very colorful which we loved!
If you are looking for a fun beginner's Spanish, then I would highly suggest the Starter Set 1 from Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids!
